Tom Hayden is a principal in TerraNova Market Strategies LLC, the Chicago and Toronto based research and strategic planning practice.  As principal, Tom helps clients turn information into insight, and insight into strategically sound business direction.

 

Tom also teaches courses in Integrated Marketing Communications in the Medill School at Northwestern University. Since November, 2006, he has served as Medill’s Chief Marketing Officer.

 

Prior to TerraNova, Tom served as President and Chief Strategy Officer of GreenHouse Communications, an independent, mid-sized marketing communications firm based in Chicago. His responsibility was to focus on the agency’s overall growth, and to develop its strategic and multi-disciplinary resources.

 

Previously, Tom was Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Chicago office of Campbell Mithun, formerly Bozell Worldwide. He joined Bozell in 1989 as Director of Account Service. In 1992, he was named to the Board of Directors of Bozell Worldwide and became General Manager of the agency’s Chicago operations, a post he continued to hold after parent company Interpublic merged Bozell with sister agency Campbell Mithun. He left Campbell Mithun in 2003 to join GreenHouse.

 

Prior to Bozell, Tom spent eight years at DDB Needham. He began his career in the 1970’s at Leo Burnett.

 

Tom’s board positions include the Harris Associates Investment Trust (Oakmark family of mutual funds) where he serves on the Audit Committee and as chair of the Management Contracts Committee, and the Chicago Charter School Foundation, which operates eleven charter school campuses within the Chicago Public School System. For the CCSF board, Tom serves on the Compensation and Development committees.

 

Active in the Chicago community, Tom serves on the board of directors of Junior Achievement. He is a past president of the Juvenile Protective Association, an organization that supports abused and neglected children. He also has served as Administrative Vice Chair and board member of Illinois Swimming, Inc., an organization that is affiliated with USA Swimming, the governing body of competitive swimming in the United States.

 

Tom received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Saint Louis University, and a Juris Doctorate degree from the Saint Louis University School of Law.

 

Tom and his wife Louise live in Wilmette with their daughter Tess. Son Thomas attends the University of Illinois Law School, and son Alec attends Northwestern University.
