Rob was born in Colorado and grew up in the mountains west of Denver. The older of two boys, Rob developed a respect for nature and love of outdoor activities. From a blue-collar family he was the first in his family to attend college, which he did at the Colorado School of Mines on academic and football scholarships. Rob met the former Sherry Helbig while attending Golden Junior High School and married her in his junior year at the School of Mines. He graduated soon after with a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering.
Rob has been in the mining and related industries for over 30 years. His first mining jobs, while attending college, were underground, mining for base metals and uranium, water tunnel work and mineral exploration with an international firm. After graduating with a mining engineering degree, Rob went to work for Allied Chemical Company and moved the family to southwestern Wyoming to mine trona. A transfer to New York State brought the family to Syracuse where their third child was born. With the impending closing of the operations, the family moved to Illinois and employment with Vulcan Materials Company as an assistant superintendent of the McCook Quarry, then Vulcan’s largest operation. While in Chicago, two more children were born (the total now stood at five) and Rob attended the University of Chicago, where he attained an MBA with concentrations in finance and operations management. When Rob left Chicago for a transfer to Atlanta, he was superintendent of the McCook Complex.
Rob moved to Atlanta to run the operations for Vulcan Materials Company in Georgia. The move has proved fruitful for the family in a number of ways. Life in the south for twelve years was a joy for the family as they grew into new phases of life together. Various promotions led to the position of Vice President and General Manager for Georgia. His responsibilities included sales and operations for 24 locations and additional support facilities. In addition to the state general management responsibilities, Rob held the responsibility for engineering, marketing, exploration and procurement for the division.
Rob has now worked for Vulcan for 25 years and currently holds position of President of Vulcan’s Midwest Division. A move he accepted over six years ago. He is responsible for three of Vulcan’s operating states (Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana) and approximately 700 employees and in excess of 30 locations.
Rob and Sherry have been married for almost 30 years. Along with the usual activities of husband and a father, Rob is active in his church, is a member of the board of various boards of directors including the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement of Chicago. Rob is involved in various industry and academic associations including state aggregate associations, along with development and capital campaign committees at the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Missouri at Rolla. Rob and Sherry have three married daughters, one daughter still looking, and one son still in college. Rob teaches some classes and workshops on leadership and while the time invested as a little league coach for his son’s traveling baseball team has passed, it has been replaced with three grandsons and two granddaughters that more than fill that void. Rob and his family continue to enjoy the outdoors with travel, camping, backpacking and other activities.
